Never Grounded

Flying is completely immune to Ground-type moves -- the mirror image of Ground's own immunity to Electric -- which removes one of the most common attacking types from the equation entirely. It's also the type of choice for the game's heaviest hitters: Lugia, Ho-Oh, Yveltal, and Rayquaza all share a 680 base stat total and are all part-Flying. Dragonite and Salamence back that up at the non-legendary tier, both reaching 600.

Built to Wall, Too

Beyond the offensive legends, Flying has a genuine defensive side: it resists Grass, Fighting, and Bug, and Skarmory turns that into a dedicated wall with 140 Defense on a pure Flying/Steel frame. Flying is super effective against Grass, Fighting, and Bug in return, giving it a clean answer to three types that otherwise threaten ground-based attackers.
