Why There Are So Many Water Types

Water is the single most common type in the Pokédex by a wide margin -- every generation adds enough Water Pokémon that no other type comes close to matching its numbers. That size gives it the widest range of roles of any type: bulky special walls like Milotic (125 Special Defense) and Primarina (126 Special Attack / 116 Special Defense) sit alongside faster attackers like Greninja, whose 122 Speed lets it outpace most of the metagame.

Legendary Tier and Matchups

Kyogre reaches a 670 base stat total as the type's signature legendary, with Manaphy and Volcanion close behind at 600. Defensively, Water is super effective against Fire, Ground, and Rock, and resists Fire, Water, Ice, and Steel in return -- a profile few types can match. Its one real liability is a shared weakness to both Electric and Grass moves, which is why teams built around a Water core usually carry a Grass- or Ground-resistant partner.
