Immune to the Two Most Common Attackers

Ghost is completely immune to both Normal and Fighting-type moves -- two of the most common attacking types in the game -- while only being weak to two types itself: Ghost and Dark. That's one of the cleanest defensive niches available, and it's why Ghost typing shows up so often as a secondary type purely for the immunities. Giratina and Lunala both reach a 680 base stat total, and Dragapult backs its 600 base stat total with 142 Speed, the fastest stat in this research pass.

The Classic Glass Cannon

Gengar is the type's defining example of the archetype the immunities enable: 130 Special Attack and 110 Speed on a frame that doesn't need to fear Normal or Fighting-type revenge kills the way most fast attackers do. Ghost is super effective against Psychic and other Ghost types, a narrow offensive spread that matters less than the type's defensive profile does.
