How Type Effectiveness Works
Every move and every Pokémon has a type, and the chart above determines how much damage a move deals based on the defender's type. There are 18 types in total, and matching a move's type to your Pokémon's own type also grants STAB (Same-Type Attack Bonus), a flat 1.5× damage boost on top of whatever the type chart says -- one of the biggest reasons a Water-type Pokémon using a Water move hits so much harder than the same Pokémon using a coverage move of another type.
How the Type Chart Has Changed
The type chart isn't static -- it has been revised twice across the series' history, both times to accompany the introduction of new types.
Generation II (Gold & Silver): added the Dark and Steel types, and rebalanced several existing matchups -- Bug became not very effective against Poison instead of super effective, Poison became neutral against Bug instead of super effective, Ghost became super effective against Psychic instead of having no effect, and Ice became not very effective against Fire instead of neutral.
Generation VI (X & Y): added the Fairy type, and changed Ghost and Dark to deal neutral damage to Steel instead of being resisted.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I read the Pokémon type chart?
Find the type of the move you're about to use along the left side (Attacking), then read across to the target Pokémon's type along the top (Defending). The cell where they meet shows the damage multiplier -- 2× for super effective, ½× for not very effective, or 0× for no effect.
How does type effectiveness work for dual-type Pokémon?
Multiply the two multipliers together. A Flying/Dragon type takes 4× damage from Ice (2× × 2×), but a Water/Steel type only takes ¼× damage from Fire (½× × ½×).
Does a type immunity override a Pokémon's other weaknesses?
Yes. If either of a dual-type Pokémon's types is immune to the attacking type, the move does no damage at all, regardless of what the other type's multiplier would have been.
How many types are there in Pokémon?
18. The original games launched with 15 types; Dark and Steel were added in Generation II (Gold & Silver), and Fairy was added in Generation VI (X & Y).
